Getting involved can make all the difference.

Calling all Citizen Scientists!

Are you concerned about the environment and want to help make a difference both locally and nationally? Become a citizen scientist!

Citizen scientists are regular people who are concerned about the state of our ecosystem and choose to get involved with conservation and charity organizations, professional scientists, and private and federally funded institutions by assisting with data collection, sharing observations, and contributing to ongoing long-term research and monitoring projects.

Citizen scientists, sometimes called "citizen naturalists," share these findings by observing nature with a critical eye. And all you need is a passion for nature and helping your community! Beach cleanups, wildlife observations, turtle nest monitoring, or even helping to educate the public about threats to local wildlife are all great examples of how citizen scientists get involved and give back to our community.

Bay Point Island Volunteer Opportunities

  • Invasive Species Management

Make a difference by helping to remove invasive plant species on the island that decimate the landscape and ecosystem.

Work with researchers to identify invasive plants, use GPS to record locations of invasive plants, and remove and properly dispose of invasive plants

  • Marine Debris Removal

Marine debris is a global issue that directly impacts the health of wildlife, water quality, and human health. Large pieces of debris, especially plastic, break down into microplastics which accumulate in wildlife such as birds and fishes. The BPI has experienced the impacts of marine debris along its shoreline and is in need of volunteers to participate in organized beach cleanups. Community action and education are key to bringing social responsibility standards closer to what the planet desperately needs to keep our beaches clean, safe, and debris-free for terrestrial and marine wildlife. Volunteer roles include: collecting marine debris, quantifying, and categorizing and completing datasheets on the types of debris collected. Debris will be sorted for proper recycling or disposal.

  • Island Conservation

Work alongside Bay Point Island’s Sustainability Manager Tom Harris and develop valuable skills identifying the island’s flora and fauna while contributing to the conservation of native species. Rotating between various focuses provides the chance for you to make a valuable impact and to develop a vast range of new skills.

  • Forest Inventory

Help to conduct a tree inventory of the island to document the species and check the health of our forests. We depend on the biodiversity in different areas of the island to assess and ensure the forest’s health and continued distribution of seeds, as well as monitoring of our resident and migratory bird species.

  • Trail Maintenance

Assist with conservation teams to clean debris from trails and trim overgrowth along trails and trailheads.

  • And more!
